Or something like that...Nothing on Koreanwiz or TAN schedule yet.
This is the SBS morning drama that's replacing the Fish Girl Show.

The story seems to revolve around 2 teenage girls (Sun Jung - mundane, but smart, and Ju Ri - urbane, but evil). Sun Jung's mother recently died and her father abandoned her younger sister, Yu Jung, leaving her with her grandmother. The child is a miserable little brat, who causes problems, whines a lot, and won't eat. Dad has taken a live-in job as a driver for a rich family - Ju Ri's. The Mom seems nice, but the Dad is a cold fish. Ju Ri is, already in episode 1, a CG. She hates Sun Jung because she's smarter than her, and the cutest (and smartest) boy in the school likes Sun Jong, rather than her. Sun Jung helps the housekeeper with the cooking, and has to fill in when she gets sick, right before Ju Ri's birthday party. Ju Ri takes the opportunity to humiliate Sun Jong in front of their mutual friends, including Cutie Boy. Naturally, it backfires on her. The only 2 advantages Ju Ri has is that she's richer and taller than Sun Jung. There are also 2 girl thugs at school that Ju Ri is paying to harass Sun Jung. They're more comical than terrifying.

Okay, the burning question now is, how big a time jump are we going to have, and how soon will it happen? I say 8 years.

So, we’ve got yet another Korean daily drama about the poor good girl and the rotten rich girl battling over the handsome nice guy?

Like, how many times have we seen that done in K-drama world? I do hope that the writer can give us enough of a new spin on that old formula to keep the show interesting.

While the “official” English title seems to be “Daughter in Law,” it was obvious that the Korean title was completely different. “Vulgar DIL vs Urbane DIL,” while perhaps a little clunky-sounding, does seem to be a much more accurate translation - and it also suggests that the two female leads will be married off soon. Maybe that’s going to be the spin on the tired old love triangle plotline that I was I’m hoping for.

Jim, have you seen the Korean drama "TRUTH" (a/k/a "HONESTY")? It has a very similar storyline to the one you just described. Choi Ji Woo plays the poor, smart girl and Ryu Si-Won plays the part of the cute, smart guy who likes her. It sounds like your story may be a remake.

You can read more about it here: http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/32257/truth-korean-tv-series/

Truth also has a plot line concerning amnesia (and the regaining of the memory later on). This is an old drama from the year 2000, and I guess that plot device was popular in Kdramas around that time. The rest of the story may not be the same, but the part you just described is identical in both dramas.

If you want to see TRUTH/HONESTY, it's available through the Video Club.

I think I've caught the sense very well, in this case <pats self on back>. 며느리 means "daughter-in-law" and 며느님 means a daughter-in-law- of some higher distinction. I played around with a couple of other translations, such as "Ordinary DIL vs Special DIL", and "Mundane DIL vs Higher DIL", but the one I put up seems to catch the difference in staus implied. Just who really is the "vulgar" (literally, "common") DIL, and who is the "urbane" (literally, "of the city" - i.e. better class), remains to be seen. Laugh Out Loud

I haven't seen "Honesty", but I've seen the theme of this current drama done so many times that I pretty much know where it's going - as do we all. >sigh< I guess it's the journey, not the destination, as they say.

Episode 2 was pretty dull. I'm wondering if I should just take a break from this - and k-dramas altogether. There's just so much one can take...

Yup, there's not much substance so far, but (as they say) it’s early. I’ll give it a few weeks to see if it grabs me, and if it doesn’t, oh well.

I also gave myself a vacation from K-dramas (except for the historicals) a while back. Everybody needs a breather now and then.

And that altercation in Episode 2 was about the lamest catfight I’ve seen in a long while. C’mon, guys, give us a good reason to watch! Wink

Things happen fast in ep. 3. There's notime jump specified, but it's clear that it's been several years: BCE (Before the Cellphone Era) to CE (Cellphone Era), since they were using pagers in eps. 1 &2. VDIL marries a good hearted schmoe from work, has a child (boy or girl?), lives with her in-laws (shrewish MIL, FIL, and BIL, who is the elder brother and a judge - seems like a decent guy), and steals crabs from the fish market. UDIL seems to have dumped, or been dumped, by the cute guy from school whom she had seduced using her family's wealth and position. Her father has passed away, and she's with some strange looking guy (husband? BF?, brother?).

I can see what's going to happen: UDIL will hook up with and marry Judge BIL, making her the "님" DIL, whilst VDIL remains vulgar - the lower ranking DIL in the household. Shrew MIL will extol UDIL and persecute VDIL, who will also be persecuted by UDIL. Rolling Eyes Soooooooo predictable... Rolling Eyes

Jim, it appears that your show has now taken a completely different turn from TRUTH/HONESTY. If you get bored with this one, I can recommend TRUTH/HONESTY to you because it is a pretty good drama, not at all predictable. Actually, I was quite surprised at the later turn of events. I can't say it was one of my favorites, but it was not at all boring or predictable, and I've read several reviews from other viewers who found it to be excellent.

As you say, sometimes you need to take a break from watching the same types of dramas over and over again because you become jaded after a while. I take an occasional break between dramas, and then, when I feel I'm ready again, I go on to my next Kdrama. I like to read a lot, so that helps quite a bit.

Things are moving very quickly now, but I'm still getting used to the characters.
Evidently, UDIL has a young uncle (about 40) who will probably get involved with VDIL's whiny younger sister (who's about 19-20). VDIL's in-laws now include an older SIL (who's mean-spirited, like her mother) and her husband, who works out of town and dotes on VDIL's daughter. VDIL's eldest BIL - the judge - is about to meet UDIL, who seems to be having an affair with a much younger guy while she's between men.

Incidentally, VDIL's MIL is played by the same actress who plays Seo Yong's mother on "You ARE My Destiny".

UDIL is much prettier than VDIL. In fact, by kdrama standards, she very hot. I don't see why VDIL reacted like that when they met after a 10 year lapse. VDIL never forgot her first love that UDIL stole from her, but UDIL was trying to be concilliatory, offering to pay for the splashed clothes and offering her hand. Now UDIL is poised to marry the Judge and thus become VDILs older SIL. If VDIL thinks she has it bad now, wait 'til she becomes UDIL's house slave. But wait until they discover UDIL isn't a virgin... Eek !
