ALONE IN LOVE is about longing. That is: L-O-N-G-I-N-G. Deep, intractable longing. I think longing is a subtext of many KDs & KMs, but in this one it is framed very differently. No families or inlaws or class distinctions creating the turmoil. The turmoil is internal...every character is struggling with it in one way or another. The central characters are in terrible emotional pain & the only salve for their heartache is the one who caused the pain in the first place. The secondary characters were awfully good...not the cartoony friends and buddies we often see.

I watched a very corrupted copy of the show, so there were things that I had to skip over. Regardless, I think the performances were very good & in many ways the story could have been about people in any country. I think the same script could have worked for American actors in Chicago rather Korean actors in Seoul. Sometimes the dialog was too filled with pop psychology, but I didn't find that too distracting. Every episode has a major scene in Dunkin Donuts & I was amused to see they had a big ad in the credits.

This is a good story about longing and heartache...not a tearjerker...but one that, to me, very much followed what really could have happened between two people. Life goes on...

I watched this drama over the summer and I really liked it... but I never wrote a review.

So here goes...

This series is unusual, for a Korean drama, because it is void of the standard, cliché plot devices. It is about a couple who are around thirty and separated, but still friends. They are dealing with some baggage that haunts them.

The acting, directing and script were good. It felt like a long movie in terms of quality. In fact, the director of this drama normally directs movies.

I got attached to the two leads and their best buddies, while watching this series. The multi-dimentional quality of the characters makes them feel like friends, because they seem so human. Their personalities and dilemmas inhabit gray areas rather than being delivered in neat little packages. Throughout the series the viewer hears the inner thoughts and reactions of (both of) the leads to one another. This is interesting, because their perspectives on the same events and issues were so different at times. In keeping with the "real life" tone of the drama, the ending is not completely happy (it was happy enough, though).

This series was thoughtful and satisfying -- I recommend it!

I'd love to hear other people's thoughts on this one...

I just got this drama and intended to watch it right after Phoenix -- but considering the big flap I caused by stating how much I liked Phoenix, I may just watch it and keep it all to my self!
