| Quote: | Last night's show...am I correct in assuming that the 2 guys
(sitting outside the copper mill having their break)told the
young boy Oonhyuk not to grow up to be like the Baron,
are the 2 North soldiers who get killed in the jail
court yard at the beginning of episode 2. |
No. I don't think so.
| Quote: | And at the end of episode 1 didn't those same 2 North soldiers get killed by the nasty looking South Korean Captain/General not by a firing squad?
He shot them in the heart first, then the firing squad? |
Yeah, it was kind of confusin because scenes were different. My guess is he shot them in the heart first, then the firing squad
| Quote: | And the little girl Eun/Oonhyuk sister is that the cutie from YH?
Why did her Missy Moon get all b*tchy & throw the cookies at them? |
I am not sure she is the same person. Probablly not because she should be a lot older by now.
I am not sure, but I think the little girl touched her.
| Quote: | Plus, was Auntie from MSMD in a traditional style kimono because
they had just travel from there, she was suppose to be Japanese,
or because of past occupation of Japan on the country? |
Are you talking about the wife of the Baron? She is the adopted daughter of Governor of Occupied Korea. She is of Korean origin, but she thinks she is Japanese. Anyway, the Baron because of his FIL becomes the most powerful person.
There are 3 groups of people in Korea during the Japnese occupation. There were traitors who served the emperor of Japan for their personal gains. Those who collaborated with Japan were rewarded handsomely. Then there were people who risked everything to fight against the Japanese. They include communists. They would work undergound or went to China or America for freedom and participated the independence movement. Then the 3rd group of people were the vast majority of Koreans. They were forced to change their name to Japanese version and speak Japanese, etc. Japan really tried to kill the Korean culture and language during 36 years of the occupation.
| Quote: | | Okay, so..... some of the characters had Japanese names. Based on a book I read -- during the Japanese occupation -- Koreans were strongly encouraged, and later forced to use Japanese names. I believe eventually Hangul was outlawed... and perhaps even speaking Korean in public. (Jason??) |
Japnese was the official language in the occupied Korea. But they could not really force it when some people simply could not speak/understand Japanese. So Japan concentrated on school children. All clasased were taught in Japanese. That is why most of older generation Koreans (70 or older) know how to speak Japanese.
| Quote: | | Was Korea still partially operating in a feudal system in the 1930's? When Kim Hae-Kyong's said she wanted to attend high school -- her mother answered by saying that she could not make such a decision without asikng the Barron. |
As I explained above, the Baron is supposed to be the most powerful person in the occupied Korea because of his FIL. Her family can leave the Baron anytime they wanted, but they probablly did not want to. _________________ Go Red Devils!

I just watched my tape of this ep, it was very good!
No one mentioned abother familiar face though! There was a guy who worked for the Baron at his copper factory, more like a foreman, not a laborer. I didn't catch his name, he was in two scenes I think, but I recongnized him. It took a minute, but I got it: He played Heejoo's (CG) dad in MSMD! Sorry but I didn't have any luck finding a picture of him from either drama.
So this is intersting, Suk-kyung ends up in the South but her uncle ends up as a high-up official type in the North! _________________ "A bird calls out, The mountain stillness deepens. An axe rings out, Mountain stillness grows."
