LOL between trying to convert these files - what a pain - and watching it, I have been busy.

And yes, Jim, I got hungry every time I watched it. the food looked delicious.

These are really funny especially if you have seen DJG and some of these movies.

It is about time to give a little background information for The Great Jang Geum.

The director of this drama, while researching for another drama, found a name Jang Geum in an old history book. Jang Geum is a female name, and he found it fascinating, because it was impossible for a female to become King's personal physician ever in Chosun. Outside royale family members, she can't get any higher than that in terms of government position, and she was not even Yang Ban, the ruling class in Chosun.

Anyway, the director researched more about Jang Guem, but a very limited information was recorded about Jang Geum. So he used his imagination to make a drama The Great Jang Geum. King Jeong Jong himself name her The Great Jang Geum.

The director said that this story is 90% fiction and 10% history.

Yes. My impression is that the situation is analogous to that of William Wallace, where the known historical facts are extremely limited. Nevertheless, with great artistic license, his story became an entertaining movie (Braveheart).

It was almost 2 am last night & I just had to turn the tv off with only 25 minutes left of this amazing saga. I have no idea how it will end, but I was determined not to ruin it by watching it while more than 1/2 asleep.

I am thinking that this series has to be one of the best things I EVER saw. I was reluctant to start with it, because I don't enjoy the historical dramas I have seen. This is different...much more a drama than "historical" although it is set at the end of 1400s/early 1500s. The costumes and settings were wonderful! Besides the fascinating story, I really feel like I learned so much from DJG. I never realized that in those days food was really the only avenue to health that people had besides basic sanitation...unless they were royalty and could afford medicines. This show blended the concepts of food as health & herbs, etc., as health so well that I was continually interested in what was going on. I also got a better understanding of acupuncture.

With all that said, the important part, however, is how well the characters were written & with the exception of a couple whose sneering & mugging/overacting for the camera annoyed me, this just was the best 54 hours of KD! I encourage everyone to watch this one!

Other than Jang Geun and Min Jeong Ho, Lady Han and Lady Choi are great in different ways.

I posted this in Yahoo Group Wang Guhn site. Here it is one of OST song called Onara

http://tinyurl.com/d2rmz

Onara Onara Ajoo Ona
- Are you coming, are you coming, are you coming for good?

Ganara Ganara Ajoo Gana
- Are you going, are you going, are you going for good?

NaNani Naryeodo MotNoNani
Nanani is trying to fly, but can't fly
- Nanai is a type of bees found only in Asia

Aniri Aniri Aninonye
-It is not, it is not, it must not be.

Eya Diya Eya Nananiyo
-Eya Diya (no meaning) It is trying to fly

Ojido Mothana Nado Gama
- You can't come, so I will go.

Holy cow, Jason! I KNEW his voice was familiar! I love Safina...his Only you (LUNA) is one of my favorites from his album ALESSANDRO SAFINA! He is certainly the last person I would suspect to be singing on a KD!

Thank you so much...as always! (I just downloaded DJG from soopi!)

I am a big fan of yours, by the way LOL...you dig up the best stuff!

Yes, I know I probably said this about another drama some where on the site but I heretofore retract my previous statements.

Dae Jang Geum is the best Korean Drama, EVER!!!!

I loooooooooved this Drama, it is my most most most most most favorite! (Can you tell I liked it?) I also must say, with apologies to Ms. Song Hye-kyo, that Lee Young-ae is my new favorite actress. Very Happy

Ok I just wanted to get that out since I just finished the last episode 5 minutes ago. I will return with comments soon...

Jason, thanks sooo much for that link to the song Ha Mang Yeon!! Even before I saw your post I was wishing I had the sheet music for this so I could play it with a Korean friend I have who is an opera singer. Now I have this at least, it's a start!

I'll miss you, Jang-geum-ah!

Wow, so what an incredible story. I must say, the writing for this drama was absolutely fabulous! There wasn't one part at any time that I thought the story was lacking or they took a bad route with the plot. Considering the length and amount of turns etc in the story, it's even more that impressive. Now considering how great the story is, what can you say about the acting?!?!! I mean, I'm not sure which is better! Lee Young-ae was fabulous as Jang Geum and this being a historical type of setting, it wasn't as if they used heartthrobs to carry the drama just on their looks. These folks all did it the right way!!!

I'll just go off about people I loved:

Jang Geum's foster father, Duk Gu: He was so awesome! I loved this guy, he always cracked me up! The both of them were a gas the entire time (the foster parents).

Head Eunuch: He's the man! (Yes, I know that is a funny thing to say about a Eunuch...)

Of course you have to love Min Jung Ho, I mean who wouldn't?

Her friends in the palace were great too, Yeun Seung aka Lady Suk Won, Lady Min, and Chang Yee (always snacking, lol!). Yeun Seung was the sweetest, you always wanted to smack Young Ro when they were kids.

Speaking of, the kid that played young Jang Geum was awesome too.

Physicans Shin and Jung were great, the latter was a hoot when he was at the herb garden early. The physician lady from Jeju really grew on you too, I ended up loving her.

The Evils did their part perfectly too. You had to hate them, but it wouldn't have been so good without them. Lets give a hand to Lady Choi and her brother, Keum Yung, Young Ro, Sir Oh, the head lady (played by Nara, Park Jungsoo) even the kings mother!

Didn't you want to smack the officials who opposed her just because she's a woman?! Typical... a2r8

And last but not least, Lady Jung and Lady Han. What great mentors!

No doubt about it, this Drama gets 5 bouncing grins (out of 5)!

Absolutely agree! Every character, every scene - it was well acted and beautiful and always kept me wanting to go on in the story!! A great, great drama - one of my very favorites from beginning to end -

Thanks, Lucas, for reminding me of some of memorible chracters in DJG. The actor who did DJG's stepdad is a character! He is known as the king of ad-libs. Most of scenes he did or said in DJG, he made them up on his own. The director wanted him to do ad-libs because her version was funnier and better. Laugh Out Loud And Lady Min! People still talk about her most memorable statement: Live small and long. Bouncing Grin

Yeah, Jason, I was excited when I saw that actor who played Duk Gu was going to play an important role in All In, which I have now. He's hilarious!

Just wanted to give this thread a bump since I downloaded the OST last night (Soompi has links to it). Just hearing the songs again put me back there. What an awesome Drama!!! Bouncing Grin

Minjoo, she'll never stop winking at you! Razz

I have read about that, it is an anime version of Dae Jang Geum but focuses on other stuff not in the original drama. I forget if we talked about it here or I just read it somewhere else.

A lil background: I had promised Lucas that I would watch DJG at least once in my lifetime...especially considering my dislike for "historical" dramas I was very iffy about this one at first but after seeing Hwang Jini and stating how much I enjoyed it Lucas made me promise to watch DJG because it was along the lines of HJ.

OK so while I was working crazy hours I was sneaking viewings of DJG while on lunch and on a break. I haven't gotten very far....just up to the episode where DJG is being booted for leaving the palace to help find "the" pheasant. And I gotta say Lucas is right it is VERY good...I am not ready to give up KSS' position as #1 but so far it is VERY good.

THIS kind of "historical" drama I can deal with...I just can't deal with the ones where men are standing around a map one minute and the next there are bodies flying everywhere and there is sooooooooooo much strategy talk....oh god its like watching people play RISK...OH THE AGONY. Laugh Out Loud Wink

Lee Byung Hoon, Director and Producer of DJG, disclosed yesterday that Lee Young Ae was 6th actress to offer the Jang Geum role.

He first sent the synopsis to Song Yoon Ha (Hotellier) . When she turned down, he sent to Kim Ha Neul (My Tutor Friend), Song Hye Gyo (All In, Full House), , Jang Jing Young (Lobbyst, now treating brain cancer), and lastly Myung Se Bin (Married Type, Wedding). They all turned down.

Director Lee then decided to go back a top actress again. He told LYA, "You were the first firson in my mind when I completed the synopsis. I have contacted no one else for this role" He even bought her dinners to get her to take the role. Bouncing Grin

This is my favorite one.
I reminded me of work. All them old ladies scheming against the younger female employees. LOL

I just wanted to share that some two and a half years since I first watched DJG I have begun my second trip through! Very Happy I watched the first four episodes on Wednesday night and I am enjoying it immensely. It has been long enough that I don't remember everything exactly so there are still nice surprises! The other fun kicker is that I am watching it with a friend of mine who is from Korea and also saw it years ago in Korea! It will be fun as I've never actually watched a Korean drama with a Korean person! But either way, it is DJG so it's gonna be great!

Queen from DJG now a visiting professor
(from Chosun Ilbo)

Park Jung-sook, who disappeared from the public eye after playing Queen Munjeong
in the 2004 hit period drama "Jewel in the Palace," has returned as an expert on what
is known as the Korean Wave.

"The Korean Wave should not remain in the realm of media such as dramas and films
only, but become a way of life," the 39-year old says. "The price of Korean Wave content
is too high at the moment. We cannot ignore the money issue completely, but there is a
need to rationalize the pricing when exporting it."

Park went back to university after finishing shooting "Jewel in the Palace" in 2004,
winning a masters' degree from Columbia University's School of International and
Public Affairs in February 2008. She is now a visiting professor at the Institute of
International Education at KyungHee University. She has lectured on the Asia-wide
Korean pop culture craze at Harvard and Columbia Universities over the past few years.

"I am coming back to broadcasting for the first time in four years," she says. On Mar. 30,
she starts a current affairs radio program for Seoul Traffic Broadcasting.
