'Topless' snowlady in New Jersey is covered up after getting frosty looks

BY BILL HUTCHINSON
DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER
Thursday, March 4th 2010, 4:00 AM

She had the curves of Venus de Milo, but her bare bosom drew an icy reception.

Cops ordered a New Jersey family to cover up their saucy snowlady after receiving a complaint that the frosty front yard figure was X-rated.

While neighboring snowmen were allowed to flaunt their nudity with coal-eyed jauntiness, Elisa Gonzalez and her kids heeded the warning from the fashion police.

They dressed their controversial snowlady in a green bikini top and hip-hiding blue sarong.

"I thought she looked more objectified and sexualized after you put the bikini on," Gonzalez, 44, of Rahway told the Newark Star-Ledger.

Gonzalez, a court reporter, said her family's twist on the favorite winter pastime was influenced by the armless ancient Greek statue Venus de Milo.

She admits the snowbabe was "curvaceous, bodacious and booty-licious" - but not obscene.

Rahway police received an anonymous complaint of "a naked snow woman" and dispatched an officer to Gonzalez's Colonia Blvd. home to investigate.

Gonzalez said the cop who came to her house over the weekend seemed to appreciate the figure's ample assets.

"He said, 'It's very good,'" said Gonzalez, adding that the cop was apologetic about asking her to tone down the display.

By Monday, warmer weather had melted the snowlady from a D cup to a C cup and it was taken down.

The ordeal left Gonzalez's daughter, Maria Conneran, 21, and son, Jack Shearing, 12, rethinking the subjects of art and censorship.

"Are you going to go to the Met and cover up all the statues?" Conneran wondered.

You have to run your image through an image-hosting service that will put it in the proper form for forums.

I use tinypic (http://tinypic.com/index.php). There are others that some people prefer.

You start by having your image icon on your desktop. Go to tinypic (or whatever). It'll say, "UPLOAD IMAGES".

Click on "BROWSE". A list of your desktop icons will appear. Click on the one you want and hit "OPEN". It will show up on the upload page. Then hit "UPLOAD NOW".

On tinypic, you'll be brought to a "SHARE THIS IMAGE" page. You'll see 4 choices for different usages. Click on the "IMG CODE FOR FORUMS AND MESSAGE BOARDS" code. That will highlight the code that begins with .

Copy that IMG code and insert it wherever you want it in your post. Make sure to hit the PREVIEW button to check out how it will look when it's posted. If it's not right, scroll down and make changes.

If it's OK, scroll down and hit SUBMIT.

BTW - "pix" is plural...........it even sounds plural when you say it. It's short for "pictures" just like "tix" is short for "tickets". "Pic" is singular.

But was she obviously nude? She looks like a very healthy 50s sweater girl type.

If she WAS nude and this was taken in New Jersey, you should send it to the guy who wrote the article.

And you're welcome.

No, because when someone goes to the Met, they expect to see nudes.

They don't expect to see nudes on their neighbor's lawn, which is why I think the complaint got filed, and the police responded.

As an artist, you have to consider the venue, as well as the audience, when you design a piece.

"Community standards" may be increasingly ignored by society, but it's still a legal term.

I disagree. There's nothing obscene about the naked human body. It's time we got away from these Middle Eastern concepts of morality which make biological reality something to be ashamed of.

I applaud the artist for making such a beautiful rendering of the female body. Time to celebrate the feminine instead of covering it up. If it was male I'd say the same except of course celebrating the male.
Shame some people still judge art with outdated principles. I betcha those same neighbors listen to rap where women are hoes and men grab crotches. Laugh Out Loud

I never said there was...

What I see is that we're talking about two different things.

You seem to believe that the person who called is somehow ashamed of nudity.

Well, I'm not, and I would have called about that snow sculpture if it was in my neighborhood.

You know why?

Because I believe in respecting other people's belief systems about modesty and the human body, even if I may not agree with them.

This is a neighborhood with small children and various ethnic backgrounds.
Someone is bound to not want to see that while they're driving their children to school, or sitting in their home.

My freedom ends where yours begins.

There is a dearth of respect and civility in America--because some folks refuse to accept boundaries anymore.
Maturity is more than being a certain age.

Those parents aren't doing their children any favors by letting them think that censorship and self-restraint are the same thing.

You can really do a lot with your old photos with a simple photo-editing program. You probably already have one on your computer.
