Ok - there has been a bit of a disagreement going on on another board. Since you guys are soooo smart and worldly-wise, I decided to put the question to you in the form of a poll.

Please just vote for your honest opinion!

I know Jamie in both sexes. Just like Yujin (or Eugene) is used by both sexes in Korea. Very Happy

I actually think that even James is a good name for a girl. But i am young and odd and would consider naming a child anything that would amuse me.

Hey, we may be mostly Americans here, however, we are intelligent and very worldly-wise. Unlike some Englishmen....uh I mean Welsh men I could think of.

Incidentally - Jamie, no fair cheating on the poll. Please change it back, otherwise I am going to tell what I know.

Thank you for putting the poll back the way it was.

It is no fun winning if you have to cheat to do it.

My son's name is Jaimie -- spelled that way from a wonderful English book I was reading when I was pregnant -- then the Bionic Woman became famous and he hated being known as Jaimie from then on -- but I think of it as both male or female, depending on who has the name!

I always thought of it as a male name. I know some women have been given it, over the years, but it's traditionally male. Many people think that there are names that are both ways, but there's usually a spelling difference which isn't appreciated (or used) anymore:

Marian (female) ; Marion (male)
Frances (female) ; Francis (male)
Caroll (female) ; Carol (male)

and so on. Some names really do go both ways, like Michael (French, Michelle).

Back when I was a teacher, I had twins in my classroom one year; two boys named Courtney and Cassidy - both of which I have seen used as girls' names since as well . . . I think Jamie works for either one as well . . . Bouncing Grin

Thank-you! SOMEONE with some sense!!

Just because some females are called it, it doesn't mean it's a "uni-sexual name"

I could call my next son Theresa. It doesn't mean that Theresa is now an either-sexed name!

"He said, Son, this world is rough
And if a man's gonna make it he's gotta be tough
And I knew I wouldn't be there to help you along
So I gave you that name and I said goodbye
I knew you'd have to get tough or die
And it's that name that's helped to make you strong c2f7

Now you just fought one helluva fight
And I know you hate me, and you've got the right
To kill me now and I wouldn't blame you if you do
But you oughta thank me before I die
For the gravel in your guts, and the spit in your eye -
'Cause I'm the #$%^@%$# that named you Sue . . . "

Speaking of Johnny Cash -- did you see previews of the upcoming movie with Joaquim Phoenix as Johnny? There's already a LOT of Oscar buzz saying his performance is amazing...

I totally agree. My sister is a prime example of a person who doesn't think when she names her children. They are three girls named Shalazarr, Jaillah (J pronouced like H) and the new baby is Amatala. Alot of people in my community are trying to be so unique with the names that they just make it up.
Anyway I named my daughter Jasmine Azania. I liked Aladdin, and her middle name is my best friend's name.

LOL Just do what I did to make my daughter's name unique - mispell it!

My daughter's name is Racheal not Rachel or Rachael. She likes the different spelling. LOL I didn't have the heart to tell her that when I was filling out her birth certificate I mispelled it.

That's awesome, Theresa! Laugh Out Loud Karma for that.

My nephew of six months is named James and everyone calls him Jamie. Seems to fit perfectly. Conversely, there was a pretty cute girl I went to college with who also went by Jamie (to be fair, I don't know how she spelled it) and I couldn't imagine a better fitting name for her either...

On the uniqueness of names however: I was at Staples this friday picking up business cards and the woman working there told me she had the same last name as me and was also thinking about naming her next son Lucas. The few times people have asked me about my name (I know it isn't the most outlandish, but not common either) I've always said that I absolutely love having a somewhat unusual/different name. Wink

Evelyn Waugh, the British author of "Brideshead Revisited", was male. And one of his marriages was to a woman named Evelyn Gardner!
