Renekia - we are meeting in front of the Houlihans in Penn Station at 5 pm. From there we will make our way to the Korean Cultural Center. If we have time, we will grab a bite to eat before the Book Signing. If not, there will be snacks there and we can eat before we all head back to Penn Station.

Miriam - I called Pad Thai and they don't have a website. I had to call information for Korea Town (or Koreatown) but they have no listing for it...I told them it was on or near 33rd Street, but she could not find anything. I could not find anything on it online either. Wish I could have been more of a help.

I had this website bookmarked. We had a get together a few years ago at this location. It's a good restaurant if you are ever in that area. The Mandoo Bar is another good one too Mandoo Bar Menu.

Laurie, thanks for all the great info. If I had have looked at the box that held the menu in it for Pad Thai, I wouldn't have had to call them - DUH!!! Sometimes I have to wonder about myself! 지난 1990년부터 한인 학생들이 많은 롱아일랜드 리틀넥(Little Neck)에서 영어 교사생활을 하면서 한인 커뮤니티와 깊은 관계를 맺어온 애드리엔 레슬리는 데뷔 소설인 <Bird and Fish>를 통해 서로 다른 문화적인 배경을 가진 다른 인종의 남녀가 어떻게 사랑할 수 있을까의 문제를 심도 깊게 파헤친다. 작가는 “새와 고기는 사랑에 빠질 수 있지만 과연 어디에서 살 수 있을까? 라는 옛말에서 힌트를 얻어 소설을 쓰기 시작했다”면서 “목표는 같지만 서로 다른 시각을 가진 한국인과 미국인의 사랑의 끝을 끝까지 캐보고 싶었다”고 말한다.



특히 소설 속에서 예술가인 한국인 주인공 남자의 이야기를 통해 자연스럽게 한국의 문화가, 또한 한국 텔레비전 드라마를 좋아하는 주인공 미국 여자를 통해 자연스럽게 한국의 대중문화 소개가 이루어져 흥미롭다. 또한 주인공 남자가 하는 한국말을 영어로 번역하지 않고 한글 음성을 그대로 살려 영어로 표현해 한국어를 영어권 독자들에게 알리는 새로운 시도를 한 점도 주목된다. 이에 대해 작가는 “전직 공립학교 읽기 전문교사로서 독자들이 한국어의 뜻을 모른다 할지라도 한국어를 발음해 보면서 전체 문맥 속에서 주인공이 무슨 말을 하고 있는지 알게 해주는 것이 이해도를 더 높일 것이라고 생각했다.”고 설명한다.

저자 소개



부르클린 출생. 롱아일랜드 대학에서 Elementary Education 학사학위와 Reading 석사학위를 받았음. 1990년부터 한국 학생과 코리안 아메리칸 학생들이 많은 롱아일랜드 리틀넥 지역 공립학교에서 영어를 가르치면서 한국에 대한 관심이 시작됐음. 이후 한국 드라마에 심취해 한국드라마동호인 모임인 ‘한국무리’ 회원으로도 활동하고 있음.



1996년 우수교육자로 연구보조금 받았음. 2003년 뉴욕교육대사로 한국 방문. 한국 언론에 다수 보도됨. 첫 소설 <Bird and Fish> 이후 2009년 펴낼 <Sea and Sky> 탈고했음. 롱아일랜드에서 남편, 아들과 함께 살고 있음.



소설 줄거리 소개



한국에서 온 아티스트인 재원. 형의 가족과 함께 뉴욕에 산다. 심한 우울증에 걸린 부인은 자살을 시도하고 재원은 죄책감을 느낀다. 스스로 실패자로 생각하면서 예술을 포기하고 형의 페인트 가게에서 점원으로 일하면서 하루하루를 살아간다.



공립 중학교 교사인 미국인 웬디. 가학적이었던 첫남편은 크론병으로 고생하는 딸을 남겨두고 죽었다. 두번째 남편은 좋은 사람이다. 하지만 웬디가 원하는 열정이 부족하다. 매일매일 집과 학교에서 어렵게 살아간다. 가장 큰 위안은 동료 리비와의 우정, 그리고 한국 드라마에 대한 사랑이다.



이들의 운명적인 만남이 시작되는데...

There will be a publishing ceremony of <Bird and Fish>, a new novel that reflects deep understanding of Korean culture through a love story between a Korean man and a Korean, written by a former teacher and author Adrienne Leslie, at Korean Cultural Service Gallery Korea, at 7:00 Pm, on Aug 22nd.



Since 1990, Adrienne has been teaching at Little Neck, Long Island, where there were plenty of Korean students, and had deep relationships with the Korean community. Through her debut novel <Bird and Fish> she reveals in depth how a man and woman with different race and cultural background can love each other. She said an old saying “Bird and Fish can fall in love, but where will they live together?” got her to start writing, and added, “I wanted to dig into the very end of a love relationship between a Korean man and an American woman who share same goals but differ in viewpoints.



In her novel, Korean culture is naturally introduced though a Korean man an artist, and Korean pop culture is introduced through an American woman who likes to watch Korean dramas. It is also unique that she took a new approach by phonetically writing down Korean instead of translating it. To this, she stated, “As a former public school teacher, I thought it would help readers to understand story better by having them pronounce Korean language and make them understand what they mean within the context.

About Author



Born in Brooklyn . Received Bachelor’s degree from Long Island University and Master’s from Reading . Since 1990, she has been teaching at a public school in Little Neck, Long Island , where there were many Korean-Americans. Felt in love with Korean Dramas, and she is a member of Koreandramas.net, a Korean dramas internet discussion site.



In 1996, she received grants for being an Outstanding Educator. In 2003, she visited Korea as a New York City Education Envoy. She was reported in various Korean media. Since her first novel <Bird and Fish>, she has just completed her next novel <Sea and Sky>. She is now residing in Long Island with her husband and a son.

It descries Jae Won the artist in NYC who hailed from Korea and lives with his own brother’s family. His wife under depression committed suicide, and Jaewon feels guilty as he blames himself for it. He considers himself a failure, and he gives up being an artist and makes a living as a shop keeper at a paint shop owned by his brother. Wendy is a public middle school teacher who lost her 1st hubby and her daughter suffers Crone’s disease; her 2ne hubby is a good person, but he lacks passion that Wendy desires. Everyday, Wendy lives day by day between school and home. Weny’s biggest solace is friendship with Libby, and her love for Korean dramas.



Then their fateful relationship unfolds…

Hi Guys...I haven't had a chance to be around much cuz work has been crazy but I didn't want to miss A's book signing. I thought I wasn't going to be able to make it but it looks like I will.
