That would be Choi Soo Jong. He plays the lead in Emperor of the Sea and played BYJ's borther in First Love. (He is also the reason I started watching K Dramas as well).

This is him in EOTS

With his wife Ha Hee Ra (Moon Hee from TBWY)

And in Emperor Wang Guhn

To the best of my knowledge, you can't get EWG anywhere. I would love to have it in the Video Club but it just isn't available.

Aww, thanks Nancy, that brought back memories! And I got to see the Otter! He was one of my favorite characters in Wang Guhn, but I had forgotten all about him. Thanks again. Now, go use your super sleuth powers and find us a way to get a subtitled version of the entire series! Especially since Theresa has also mentioned that she would like to have it for the vc. Go, Nancy, go...

Well the VODs are still there, but no subtitles. You can watch some of them and test your memory, or if someone can translate... http://www.kbs.co.kr/drama/king/scenario.htm I'm not sure if the whole series is there though. I might get your hopes up. About the first 8 rows of blocks have something.

Yeah This is why I even started k-Dramas too, Wang Guhn. I was so crazy about him. My husband even would watch with me back then. Sigh the good old days.
That Bald crazy emperor and the other emperor with the sons. #2 Emperor had the best facial expressions.

Can't we write in and encourage KBS to replay Wang Guhn. Watching those VODS really awakened the memories of that great show. Read this on line which I had forgotten...
from http://216.239.51.104/search?q=cache:HDkYJOmPym0J:p205.ezboard.com/» fthefandomzonefrm3.showMessageRange%3FtopicID%3D32.topic%26start%3D201%26stop%» 3D220+dvd+wang+guhn&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=24&gl=us Re: Music
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Goongyae's Theme/Buddhist Chant
-KBS Drama Emperor Wang Guhn-

Now that I have some of Emperor Wang Guhn on DVD I can post some screencaps of this Korean Historical Drama. All I can say is that it is awe inspiring and an inspiration to me. It is what I honestly thought Kill Bill could have been.

Goongyae's Buddhist Chant is very chilling and very prophetic as Master Bumkyo tries to get him to renounce earthly matters so that he can give himself over to Buddha. Goongyae is only about 14 when his nanny finally gets him to Saedal Temple after years on the run from Shilla Royal Guards!

He ended up losing his eye as a baby when his father King Kyungmoon gave in to the 2 Queens who resented the fact that he actually loved a concubine more than them. By the time Goongyae reached Saedal Temple the woman that he always thought was his mother revealed the fact that she was actually his nanny and that they were always on the run because he was actually a banished Prince of Shilla.

Ironically, on the day of Goongyae's birth all signs pointed to the fact that he would rise to become a Great King of Shilla, but the elder of the 2 Queens had the fortune re-read to cast him as a child possessed by Demons!

Because of her tampering the 1,000 year kingdom of Shilla came to an end. When Goongyae finally reaches Saedal and Master Bumkyo he is confused by the nanny's dying confession that she is NOT his real mother. She gave him his royal seal that showed who he really was and then died from the years of harsh survival.

When Master Bumkyo reveals tells Goongyae who he really is, Goongyae cannot let go of the past. So when he is seated in front of the altar and the ritual is begun where one is supposed to renounce earthly desires. When the Master tells him this, Young Goongyae does not respond as they shave his head. It is at this point that the Buddhist began chanting as they shaved his head.

To see the burning animosity in the eyes of this young korean child actor was totally different than damn near all of the J-drama's I have ever seen. You could not help but say to yourself "This kid is gonna end up taking this out on a LOTTA PEOPLE!"

When the episode ends you hear his thoughts as they shave his head and dip the pieces in water and all he says is the fact that he will get back what they stole from him. That's a Revenge flick! They killed his mother, stole his identity, stole his inheritance, called him a Demon Child and then chased him up and down Shilla! He lost his eye because of it and then the Kingdom fell into ruin... -_-
Ouch!

Episode 3 on vod chart

Wang Guhn certainly inspired a lot of us and sent us to this board... how about a revival?

I, too, wish WYBE would show this drama again. I wrote to them once about it (no reply) and spoke to someone there (a long time ago, don't remember who it was.) Anyway, I was told that WYBE no longer has the tapes. Which, if true, means that if they were to reshow, they would have to re-obtain a copy. I don't know exactly how all of that works, but I think they get the tapes from a California station, who in turn has received them from Korea. Theresa, do you know the process?

I also asked KBS America if they would ever offer it on their EOD service and they said they 'had no plans at this time' to do so, so that's a no, too.

At any rate, I'm not sure who we could write to 'encourage' another replay. Perhaps one of you who went to the Korea Sparkling Event made a media or KBS contact who would help. If we could find out who is the right person to ask, I have a feeling that this board as a collective is a force with which to be reckoned.

Found this to help us get an historical perspective of where we have been... from ...http://www.koreanhistory.net/drama/drama.html   Our lastest drama takes place around 664? Way early, but Wang would follow nicely. Smile

Actually I did a little research and I found out a few things.....

WYBE does have copies of Wang Guhn.

Pressure needs to be put onto the Programming department to get them to re-air it.

WYBE members (those who purchased a membership) have a bigger say.

So, my idea?

People should e-mail WYBE's programming department and offer to become members if they reair Wang Guhn.

How about those of us who are semi-local volunteering as a group to answer phones for their pledge week.

I would be willing to answer phones, write letters, anything, in order to prompt WYBE to show Wang Guhn again, in fact, I have in the past done or offered to do all of those things, irrespective of Wang Guhn. However, let me tell you what my (limited) experience with them has been. I should preface by saying that I'm not trying to WYBE-bash, but that I have not had a positive experience with them.

I was a donor/member for a couple of years. I never received my card (even after I had called several times to ask for it), I did go there to answer phones during a pledge week, and was told they didn't need me, AFTER I had already driven all the way there (and I had confirmed earlier that same day!), and they have never sent me a renewal notice, nor a tax letter for my donations, so I stopped sending them money. I am sure that the individual folks who work there are bright and talented and do their best, but the place was mismanaged and disorganized and I became frustrated with that, so I dropped out of being a donor altogether.

I like to support causes I believe in, and I would like to support WYBE again, but I felt like my donation was going down a black hole. I don't need big thank yous or anything like that, but I need to feel like the places I support are using my (and all) donations in a sensible way.

Now that I've gotten that off of my chest, I will do as Theresa suggested and try to re-up my membership and, even though I have requested this before to no avail, I will also contact the programming department to ask about the possibility of re-airing the show. Is there a particular person in programming that we should contact? Is anyone else willing to give them a call or an email and make the same request?

Even bigger issue;

If they have the tapes--do they have permission to re-air the program???
KBS owns the copyright to this program and THEY would be the ones to give WYBE permission, regardless of how badly WYBE wanted to air WG again.

I am just thinking - I wonder how much it costs to air an episode of this drama. If it isn't that much - say $5, we could "sponsor" episodes. (You know - like you sponsor an animal at the zoo).

My guess would be that their programming department has 2 people in it - if that. I know they run the station on a shoe string.

From what I remember, WYBE used to give out full box sets of this drama way back when. It was on one of their um... money begging nights. :p
